John Patterson

Born circa 1735 (+-10 years)

John Paterson was a pioneer of Gaspe, Quebec, Canada, ancestor of most English Gaspesians, and ancestor of thousands throughout Canada, the USA, and beyond.

Who was he? Where did he come from? Did he serve in the Seven Years  War? Was he with Wolfe in Gaspe in 1758? Who was his wife? Where did  they marry? What of the three daughters on the 1765 census?  Why did  he choose to make his home some miles up the South West Arm? The questions abound.

The precious few facts known about John provide few clues to the answers. It is probably safe to say research has been ongoing for at least the last fifty years, as successive generations of his descendants have sought to solve the mystery. Sometimes it's seemed there were answers, only to have subsequent research refute them. There has been progress, yes, and hope, always; the quest continues.

This website has been created for the express purpose of disseminating available information; these pages present the few documented facts, share research done, and suggest that yet to be done. Visitors are encouraged to share their knowledge and ideas. There is an open invitation to participate in or support collaborative efforts to finally answer the question: who was John Paterson? Where did he come from? 2014 marks the 250th anniversary of John's arrival in Gaspe. Will there be answers to celebrate?
